The N.C. Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) urges the public to participate in the State’s second Digital Opportunity Survey to share updates on their needs for affordable high-speed internet, computers, and digital skills to safely use online resources to work, learn, benefit from health care, access government services, and thrive in the modern digital economy. Responses from residents will be used to update State plans and continue initiatives with partners that meet North Carolinians’ evolving needs.

“Every community deserves to have access to affordable and reliable high-speed internet, computers and digital skills,” said NCDIT Secretary and State Chief Information Officer Nate Denny. “By surveying our residents over time, we will update our understanding of individuals’ needs and their confidence in digital skills, which is crucial for reevaluating our strategies to building a stronger state and advancing our workforce.”

The N.C. Department of Information Technology’s (NCDIT) Division of Broadband and Digital Opportunity is launching this survey in collaboration with the Friday Institute at NC State University. The Digital Opportunity Survey is available in 10 languages and can be taken online at go.ncsu.edu/digitalsurvey or in print format for individuals who do not have internet access. NCDIT is sharing a promotional toolkit with other state government agencies, local governments, grantees, nonprofits and community organizations across the state to provide awareness of the survey and drive participation. More details including the toolkit, graphics, and paper surveys are available at ncbroadband.gov/survey-2026.

To empower residents to access and safely use the internet for essential services, the Division of Broadband and Digital Opportunity created a statewide digital support resource through its partnership with NC United Way. NC 211 provides free and confidential information to callers for help using the internet, finding public computers and Wi-Fi and digital classes. NCDIT also launched its Tech Resource Finder website in December 2024 to help residents find local digital support services for digital opportunity by county, zip code or resource type.

Additionally, the division has launched nearly $700 million in American Rescue Plan Act-funded high-speed internet infrastructure projects that will extend broadband access to nearly 258,000 homes, businesses and community anchor institutions.
