NCDOT Encroachments

Placement of utilities in accordance with the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) specifications is beneficial to both parties. Watch the video below to learn more about the encroachments processes for broadband providers.

Dig-Once, Open Trench Construction Notifications

In accordance with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Broadband Infrastructure Deployment rule, broadband infrastructure entities can register to receive information from NCDOT to assist in the planning and deployment of their broadband facilities. These notification will include, but are not limited to, an annual distribution of the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) as well as “dig-once” opportunities on NCDOT highway projects.

Under Executive Order 91, NCDIT and NCDOT have developed a “dig-once” policy to reduce repeated broadband installation excavations along state-maintained roads that are not part of the National Highway System.  The policy requires internet service providers using conventional open-trench construction to provide notice of upcoming joint-trench opportunities through the Broadband Infrastructure Office. To provide notice, submit information about your upcoming project using the form on this page.

Interested broadband providers should sign up to receive email notifications for dig-once opportunities and other important NCDOT information. Dig-Once notices will also be posted on this website for 14 days.
