Faith-Based Organizations Community

The Office of Digital Opportunity convenes a quarterly meeting of faith-based organizations, including churches, ministries, and community partners, that provide or would like to provide services and resources to close the digital divide.

Through this series of virtual meetings, attendees can learn, share best practices and collaborate on initiatives that promote digital skills, computer and device distribution, digital navigator programs and other opportunities that expand access to technology. The community is also planning to include periodic in-person gatherings to strengthen its collaboration.

Upcoming Session:

  • Chiquitta Lesenne, CEO of Shackle Free Ministries, will lead the discussion “Building Bridges Between Missions: Aligning Faith and Digital Opportunity” to explore how nonprofits and faith leaders can work together to create a culture of digital literacy.

Past Sessions:

  • Spencer Baldwin, Superintendent of Peletah Academic Center for Excellence, led the discussion “From Access to Impact: Advancing Digital Opportunities in Faith Based and Educational Spaces,” which focused on Peletah's initiative that addresses infrastructure and access (desktop computers, laptops, and low-cost internet), digital literacy programs for parents, grandparents, and guardians of students, and faith-based community engagement.
  • Teresa Rush Edwards, Executive Director of ESG Foundation, discussed the “Connect NC Rural Initiative,” exploring how their program enables golden residents in North Carolina to connect with family, friends, health providers and other online services through digital devices and digital literacy training. Connect NC Rural also ensures workforce entry or re-entry readiness of North Carolinian labor-force residents through upskills training and workforce development for renewable energy, telehealth, and artificial energy industries. They are working to equip North Carolina future leaders with internet access and technology to close the homework gap and be prepared for the future.
