Funding

Federal government agencies and national and state nonprofit organizations historically have provided grants for broadband providers, counties and municipalities working toward broadband access for unserved and underserved populations. Loans for broadband deployment projects have also been made available. However, obtaining funding through grants and loans is a long and competitive process. Further, each grant program has varying rules, requirements and application processes.

Communities have also tapped local foundations or businesses for assistance. Others have benefited from residents who have contributed funds, or who have created internet service companies.

Broadband USA, a federal program administered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, publishes an up-to-date list of broadband deployment grants.

Fiber Broadband Association: Funding

The Fiber Broadband Association, formerly the Fiber to the Home Council, maintains a list of different funding resources that are or may be available. The requirements for each program are very specific, and some programs depend upon the agency’s focus over a particular planning period.
