The FCC announced Thursday that 4 providers elected to receive Connect America Funds (CAF) for use in North Carolina. Telecommunications providers AT&T, CenturyLink, Frontier and Windstream will receive more than $19 million of funding for each of the next 6 years that will be used to improve the connectivity and speed of more than 68,000 households and businesses.

“Broadband service is vital to the economic future and continued advancement in North Carolina,” said Jeffrey Sural, General Counsel and Director of Digital Infrastructure for North Carolina Information Technology Services . “We are excited that we have providers who see the value in providing a higher quality of service in our rural areas.”

Carriers receiving CAF support must complete 100% of build-out by the end of 2020, with required milestones each year. The goal of the support is the delivery of service with speeds of at least 10 Mbps download/1 Mbps upload.
